Terry Gilliam (born 1940) is an animator, director and screenwriter best known for his work as part of the comedy troupe Monty Python, where he created the animated material that helped to define the humour and feel of the group.
His inspirations for the Python animations came from his time as an art major at university before quitting due to disagreements with his lecturer. In this class they could create comic captions for class artworks and Gilliam carried on this practise after quitting the course. looking through books for artworks to insult and defecate. His cut-out work was inspired by a film by Stan Vanderbeek which used similar techniques. Fairytales were also influential in the formation of his artistic style.
